Spiros Mantzavinos: The Mantzavinos Group

Spiros Mantzavinos owns The Mantzavinos Group – a public affairs and communications firm with experience in the energy, business, non-profit and health care sectors. During nearly two decades of working in public affairs, government lobbying and communications, he has gained extensive knowledge and understanding of how government, media and politics operate and intersect.

Prior to launching The Mantzavinos Group, Spiros managed government and media relations for Christiana Care Health System, one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s largest academic health care providers. While there, he led the health system’s media relations team working with local, regional and national press, wrote web and intranet content and managed the health system’s online newsroom. Coupled with his media relations duties, he lobbied state government on behalf of Christiana Care and worked closely with Delaware’s Congressional Delegation to secure federal appropriations. In 2009, the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Institutional Advancement awarded Spiros and the team from Christiana Care its Public Affairs/Community Relations Award of Excellence for their work in defeating a proposed hospital provider tax.

Before joining Christiana Care, Spiros worked for the American Heart Association where he advanced the association’s public policy agenda in Delaware and the City of Philadelphia. His advocacy responsibilities included working with the Heart Association’s communications team and writing talking points, newsletter articles and electronic advocacy alerts to a 3,000-member grassroots network. His accomplishments included serving in a leadership role for the Breathe Free Philadelphia Alliance, a coalition created to enact a smoking ban in Philadelphia, and securing nearly a 200% increase in state funding for Delaware’s defibrillator program.

Previously, he served as External Affairs Manager for Motiva Enterprises’ (a joint venture between Shell Oil Products US and Saudi Aramco) Delaware City Refinery. There, Spiros managed the plant’s comprehensive public affairs program during a three-year period of intense public, media and regulatory scrutiny. Spiros played a vital role in formulating government relations and communications strategies to manage multiple and evolving issues, maintaining the facility’s license to operate.

Spiros began his Delaware public affairs career working for the Delaware State Senate’s Majority Caucus. There, he staffed the Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Control Committee and the Senate Energy and Transit Committee. He then became Vice-President of Government Affairs for the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, lobbying on behalf of the Chamber’s 1,700 members before County and State Government.

In addition to leading The Mantzavinos Group, Spiros appears as a guest commentator on WHYY-TV’s First segment “State of Play” and is on the board of directors of PRSA Delaware. He earned a M.A. in political science from the University of Delaware and holds a B.A. in economics and political science from Muhlenberg College.
